For eager city-goers looking to live in the center of the action, Penn Quarter/ Chinatown is the place to live. With a busy, Manhattan like vibe, there is an array of things to do from bar hopping to catching a show at the local theatre. In one of DC’s most urban neighborhoods, you will never be bored living in this central hub of the city.

Steps from the Capital

Just a few minutes from the heart of the capital, Penn Quarter/ Chinatown is bound by 15th Street to the west, New York Ave to the north, Louisiana Ave to the southeast and Tiber Creek to the south.

Hub of Public Transportation

Centered in the heart of D.C., there are plenty of options for taking public transit. Gallery Place on the Red and Green/ Yellow Lines is one of the city’s busiest. In addition, one could take Metro Center on the edge of the neighborhood, located on the Red and Blue/ Orange Lines. Many bus lines also run through the area and the neighborhood is central enough that walking and biking are easy ways to get to other parts of the city as well. The only downside is for those who own cars, street parking is hard to come by and garage spots can be a bit expensive.

Fast-Paced Life for City Lovers

Penn Quarter/ Chinatown is the perfect place to live if you are looking for a fast-paced lifestyle. In the center of the city, there will always be a buzz of activity going on outside your window. Above the many storefronts, there are plenty of apartments to choose from, mostly one bedrooms units. While the neighborhood is a little expensive compared to others, many young professionals make their home here.

Drama, Drama, Drama

Whether you are interested in classic plays, comedies or new productions, Penn Quarter/ Chinatown is a place where theater thrives. Wooolly Mammoth Theater Company, located on D Street, is known for its production of new and innovative plays. Priding itself on its “research and development role” within American theater, it attracts a young and diverse audience with great ticket deals such as “pay what you want” performances and 15 dollar stampede seats.

Nearby on 7th Street is the Shakespeare Theater Company at the Harman Center for the Arts, known for putting on both classic performances such as Othello, Kiss Me, Kate and Taming of the Shrew as well as newer ones including Potted Potter—The Unauthorized Harry Experience.

For art lovers, the Smithsonian American Art Museum is right on 8th and F Streets. Presenting a large collection of contemporary pieces, American impressionist paintings, and masterpieces from the Gilded Age and more. The best part about it is that admission is free! And though the neighborhood itself is short on open park space, the National Mall is only a stroll away.

Try Something New Every Night

At any time of day or night, there is always something to do in Penn Quarter/ Chinatown. With tons of retail options, sidewalks are always milling with pedestrians, some tourists exploring and some residents going about their daily routine.  

Among the many restaurants, people love going to Rasike on D Street for mid-priced authentic Indian food. Known for its impeccable customer service, Rasika offers a wide selection of dishes, with crowd favorites including the Palak Chaat, a crispy spinach dish, and the black cod. It also has a second location on New Hampshire Ave.

Another popular choice is Zaytinya, which serves food from Greece, Turkey and Lebanon. Dishes are served small plate style, giving you the opportunity to sample a little bit of everything. Zaytinya offers many different salads and spreads, with their kabobs consistently receiving rave reviews. It will most likely be busy during dinner hours, but with their attentive service, you won’t even notice the wait.

For a night out, Denson Liquor Bar on F Street is a great place for intimate cocktails with good friends. In the basement of a pizza joint, the dim lighting gives it a classy, speakeasy vibe.  Fun and low key, its location makes it easy for the casual tourist to pass right by. Other hotspots include bars like RFD Washington on 7th street and Co Co Salsa on F street, serving delicious chocolate treats.  

Everything Packed into a Few City Blocks

Penn Quarter/ Chinatown truly offers its residents everything they could need within a short walk from their homes. Packed with retail and food options, this urban neighborhood is not for people looking for a serene, slow-paced life. Always exciting, should be on your list of places to visit in DC whether or not you end up settling here for good.
